Summary America's First Chaplain studies the family background, education, ministerial career, ideology, political activities, exile to England, and return to America of Jacob Duché, Anglican minister of Philadelphia's Christ Church during the American Revolution. Duché played a critical role in the early stages of the revolution as the spiritual mentor of revolutionaries but underwent a process of disaffection as the revolution's goals and leadership changed that culminated in a treason conviction, exile, and incorrect designation as a loyalist.>
